Nia is a lifelong native of the river city, Natchez, Mississippi. She has been married to her high school sweetheart, David, for 27 years. Together, they have two sons, Christian (26) and Joshua (25). After caring for her ailing grandfather, Nia began her nursing career as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in 2007. Graduating at the top of her class, she was named “Student Nurse of the Year”. Her desire to provide an enhanced level of care drove her to further her education. In 2010 and 2013 respectively, she obtained an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees from Alcorn State University. During this time, Nia served as the official ambassador for her class. In November 2018, Nia graduated from Walden University, where she obtained her Master of Science in Nursing. After much preparation, she became a certified nurse practitioner in 2019. A life-long learner, Nia completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Alcorn State University on May 14, 2022. She was the recipient of the Marcia Rachel’s Leadership Scholarship through the Mississippi Nursing Foundation as well as the Advanced Degree Scholarship through Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi. Nia is currently employed at Alcorn State University as the first full-time nurse practitioner on the university’s main campus in Lorman, Mississippi.
Nia is a catalyst for nursing service, leadership, and advocacy. With nearly 20 years in nursing experience, Nia has served in many capacities, including Director of Nursing, Clinical Director, Charge Nurse, and various other roles. She has mentored many student nurses and novice nurses, instilling a solid foundation for future nursing practice. Nia has served in several capacities on both, the local and state level of Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi, an organization dedicated to excellence in healthcare. As a member of District VI-Natchez, she has served two consecutive terms as president, chairperson of the project committee, and currently serves as treasurer and chairperson of the program committee. Under Nia’s leadership, District VI saw a vast increase in financial stability. In 2024, Nia was named Natchez Woman of the Year by Seeds of Change Resource Foundation. On the state level, Nia has served as Financial Secretary and is elated to currently serve as the 19th state president of Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi. Nia is helping to bridge the gap in healthcare disparities by networking with the Mississippi State Department of Health and other healthcare organizations to improve healthcare outcomes among underserved communities.
Nia holds membership with the National Black Nurses’ Association, Mississippi Nurses Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, National Society of Leadership and Success, and Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society serving as Treasurer of Tau Eta Chapter.
In addition to her full-time position, Nia stays busy as a youth counselor with Magnolia Medical Foundation where she conducts seminars on sex education, HIV/AIDS prevention, and pregnancy prevention for youths ages 11-19. She is also certified by the Mississippi State Department of Health as a HIV Prevention, Testing, and Training instructor and as an asthma facilitator with the American Lung Association. Nia also finds time to work as a Risk Assessment Coordinator with Matrix Medical, identifying gaps in care in at-risk populations. On Sunday mornings, Nia can be found at the piano at Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Natchez, Mississippi where she has played nearly 40 years and serves as youth counselor. Nia lives Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” As a nurse, it is her goal to empower others to be the best they can be, while demonstrating service through leadership.
