Mrs. Lucy Tapley
1832-1893
Mrs. Lucy Tapley, aslo known as Aunt Lucy was the FIRST WOMAN IN MISSISSIPPI TO VOTE. She was a land owner. She lived on President street in a very nice cottage and lot in Jackson. Her mother purchased her freedom for $600 in gold she made from washing clothes. After the death of her husband, Lucy lived with her daughter. Her daughter graduated from Tougaloo College and was a very successful teacher in the colored schools in Jackson. Lucy Tapley died in 1893.
