Misha Washington-Mokwena was born January 23, 1959, in East Orange, New Jersey, to James and Lila Washington. Misha left us on May 25, 2024, with her husband by her side. Misha cared deeply for the people in her life and for her furry friends. Always encouraging other to “put a smile on someone’s face.” She also attended the Marie Wiley School of Dance and worked as a candy striper at East Orange General Hospital.
Misha was educated in the East Orange Public School district at Columbian Elementary and attended Clifford J. Scott High School. While there, she served on the drill team and Tartan yearbook staff and was a member of the National Honor Society, where she graduated with honors. She attended Syracuse University in New York, where she discovered the power of film and television, she auditioned and was cast as the Lady in Yellow for the Broadway touring production of “For Colored Girls who have considered suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf.”
In 1981, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. During her studies, she met her future husband of 38 years, Ronald Mokwena. Misha and Ron both had successful acting careers in film and television shows. Misha starred in the half situation comedy, “Me and Mrs. C.” She also starred in feature film “He’s My Girl.” Ron starred in the half hour comedy show, “Different World.” He also appeared in “Matlock” and “Sarafina” on Broadway.
Misha and Ron moved back to the East coast after living in California for over 17 years. As they were traveling from New York to New Jersey on a local bus line, the bus driver told them “More than ten people jump off the George Washington Bridge daily.” Immediately after that Misha and Ron began their research and discovered the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) had all labeled suicide an epidemic and a crisis in America. That led them to create the Suicide Watch and Wellness Foundation. “We Care Mississippi with Misha” and “It is a Brand – New Day with Misha McK” are television programs that provide essential resources for those struggling with mental health issues. They have reached millions of viewers and have impacted many lives.
Misha was known for her heartfelt commitment to the foundation’s mission. She was the face and voice behind numerous campaigns, striving to educate the public on the importance of mental health and the power of compassion. Her tireless efforts have left a legacy that will continue to inspire us all. Despite her many accomplishments, Misha remained humble and giving, touching countless people with her patience and kindness. While preparing for Suicide month in 2024, Misha had a heart attack and departed this life. Sadley, a few months later her husband Ron followed her in death. Rest in Peace Misha and Ron. Your love for others and generous spirit will live on.
